Optical Refractometers Product Description
The low cost models within the E-line range of handheld optical refractometers are specifically suited for light industrial use within small to medium sized businesses and by hobbyists handling fruit, beverages, confectionery, jam, honey and other sugar based products as well as for calculating concentration or blend ratios of heat transfer fluids like glycol, antifreeze, cutting fluids and quenchants.
E-line ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) optical refractometers
The E-line ATC optical refractometers are particularly suited for testing semi-solid substances such as apples, melons, grapes sugar beet and potatoes during the harvest period in order to establish fruit ripeness. Juice from the product may be squeezed onto the optical refractometer’s prism surface or alternatively a slice 2mm thick may be placed on the prism surface for direct reading of sugar content.
These optical refractometers feature an internal device that corrects for temperature (ATC) making the measurement fast and accurate. The optical refractometers will automatically take into account any difference in temperature over the range 10-30°C from the industry standard reference temperature of 20°C.
Brewers E-line ATC economy optical refractometer
This dual scale, Brix (°Plato) and Wort Specific Gravity (SG), ATC optical refractometer model was specially designed for the measurement of Wort prior to fermentation. Brewers using an e-line optical refractometer benefit considerably when compared to conventional hydrometer use for testing wort concentration as they are far easier to handle in wet brew-house conditions and only require the smallest amount of sample to achieve accurate results. The optical refractometer’s SG scale is based on pure sucrose. As most beer recipes are likely to have been formulated using a hydrometer, it may be necessary to apply a small offset to the optical refractometer for each beer type to negate the effects of the other “non-sugar” ingredients in the Wort. Initial side-by-side comparison of Wort SG obtained by your optical refractometer and hydrometer will soon establish if any offsetting is required.
All E-line ATC optical refractometers are constructed from alloy with an outer sheath of rubber to prevent heat entering the instrument from the operator’s hand. The optical refractometers are supplied in a hard case with a 12-month warranty.
Adblue® optical refractometers
In an effort to reduce environmental pollution, the European Union has established certain regulation about emissions from heavy and light goods vehicles. One method adopted by vehicle manufacturers to allow compliance is SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), which chemically reduces NOx emissions using a urea fuel additive.
Adblue® is one such additive that is stored as a concentration in a separate tank to the fuel prior to mixing. In order to maintain efficiency and to be sure that systems are not compromised, it is essential that the concentration is accurately maintained. Measuring devices such as the E-line ATC Automotive (Adblue®) optical refractometers may perform such checks.
E-Line 80 Optical Refractometer
The E-Line 80 is a dual scale Brix optical refractometer ideal for use in the food industry and other applications requiring concentration measurements over a wide measuring range up to 80° Brix (%weight sucrose).
These optical refractometers are of all metal construction with range selection being made by a simple rotary control on the instrument barrel. The E-Line 80 optical refractometers are calibrated to read accurately at 20°C. Readings can be taken at any other temperature by applying a correction factor or by adjusting the °zero calibration screw on the optical refractometer to offset the effects of temperature compared to the reading of water.
These optical refractometers are constructed from alloy and they are supplied in a hard case with a 12-month warranty.
E-line Gemological Optical Refractometers
Refractive Index is one of the most important optical parameters used to identify and authenticate polished precious and semi-precious gemstones.
The E-Line Gemological optical refractometer is a low cost, lightweight measuring instrument used by jewelers and traders of gemstones to measure polished stones over a refractive index range of 1.30 to 1.81 RI. The optical refractometer can also be used to identify whether a particular stone is Isotropic or Anistropic (uniaxial or biaxial).
The gemological optical refractometer is made of painted durable alloy and is supplied with an illuminating device, polarizing filter and instruction manual.

Ideal for measuring high sugar content products such as jams, marmalades, beverage concentrates, fruit pulps, sugar syrups, and other similar products. Includes carrying case and pipette. Special calibration fluids (accurate sugar solutions) or solid test plates are needed to verify the calibration because water is off-scale.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Water-in-Honey (PN# 44-812)
Economy honey optical refractometer designed to control the quality of fresh honey. Being a low cost version it’s ideal for the bee keeping industry. Includes carrying case and pipette. For percent water in honey temperature correction table.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Brewing – Wort SG (PN# 44-823)
Brewers optical refractometer for the measurement of “Wort” (beer) contained the “Mash Tun” (vessel) prior to fermentation. The SG scale is based on pure sucrose and, as beer recipes are likely to have been formulated using a hydrometer, it may be necessary to apply a small offset for each beer type to negate the effects of other ingredients in the Wort that are not pure sugar. Includes carrying case and pipette.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Wine – 0-40 % Mass (°Brix) and 0-25 Alcohol Probable (A.P.) (PN# 44-809)
The Brix scale expresses the grape must (juice) as sucrose percent by weight whilst the alternative Probable Alcohol scale expresses the same information as an estimate of the alcohol content of the wine at the end of the fermentation process. Includes carrying case and pipette.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Wine – 0-40 % Mass (°Brix) and 0-140 Oechsle D (PN# 44-817)

Incorporates three wine scales in one instrument, making grape must assessment more practical for auditors covering a large geographical area where a number of different scales are adopted. Includes carrying case and pipette. The Babo scale is also used for determining the sugar content of grape must and is used mainly in Austria.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Wine – 0-20 Baumé and 0-25 Alcohol Probable (A.P.) (PN# 44-819)
Displays two industry specific scales used in the wine industry to express the ripeness of grapes at point of harvest. The Baumê scale is used in differing regions of France, Spain, and Australia to provide payment factors based on grape must (juice) sugar content, whereas the alternative Probable Alcohol scale expresses the same information as an estimate of the alcohol content of the wine at the end of the fermentation process and is commonly used in France and in the north-east regions of Spain. Includes carrying case and pipette.
E-line ATC Optical Refractometer: Aquatic – Salinity % (PPT) and Specific Gravity (PN# 44-808)
